This is a commentary article written by the president of a private university in Taiwan (http://udn.com/NEWS/OPINION/X1/4278369.shtml). The arguments raised by this article contain many issues to be discussed. First of all, it has been debating for many years regarding the roles played by our MOE (Ministry of Education). Second, following the service system perspective which I treat education is a service system, what is current status among service providers, clients (parents or companies), and service targets (students) in our society under political-economical situation. Third, how industries treat the graduates from universities in Taiwan, and what are their expectation and gaps? Fourth, what we should treat other practices in other countries while facing our own educational system?
As a professor in a national university, I would like to recognize different educational institutes in their capacities to serve their clients and targets. However, as a parent, I would appreciate and show my respect to those institutes which have done something more delightful for our kids in schools or even graduated. For students, I would expect them to speak out more anticipation to service providers and show their enthusiasm in learning; therefore, all efforts are worthwhile and encouraging for service providers. It has to be a service aspect to view this complicated relations among government, schools, familties, and students.
It is difficult, so we need to know more in details, and discussions should be then continuing.
